It felt good to Dave to be back on the road, both literally and metaphorically. As difficult and dangerous as he feared the journey ahead of them may be, he knew it had to be made, so getting miles behind them was a good thing. Plus, it was a beautiful day and he was trying to somewhat enjoy himself, despite knowing none of them could let their guard down.
He counted his blessings, and topping the list was since they were away from home when this had happened, at least they were far out in the country instead of in the city or at the beach. Yeah, they were far from home, but at least out here, the chaos from the blackout was minimal, and it sounded a bit silly to even refer to it as such. The grid and vehicle failure may have indirectly caused Billy, Doug, and the guys from Baltimore to have done what they did to a certain extent, but the only real ‘chaos’ it had caused was C.J. and Colin breaking into the restaurant to steal some food, and thankfully, had turned out to not have been much in the end.
Dave could only guess after almost two days now, things in the cities were getting bad. Surely fuel was almost completely gone, food was getting harder to find in stores, and with the grid out, water and sewer service was probably gone as well. If it hadn’t already begun, riots, looting, and burglary, as a direct and indirect result of these unavailable necessities, was sure to come very soon. And once it did, that would be it. Out here, the effects of the grid failure would surely be felt, but the lower population density alone would restrict how bad things got substantially. For a while, anyway.
Still, he knew they would need to be diligent. There were still people here, and therefore still the dangerous possibility of desperate locals or other travelers and refugees, and given a little time, even organized marauders. Dave had read books where even outside the cities where the organized gangs had been essentially nonexistent, marauder groups of different types, ranging in makeup from biker gangs to rogue cops, effectually took control of small towns and the countryside surrounding them. They pillaged homes for food, weapons, and other essentials for survival, trade, or entertainment.
Dave looked around him, shuddering at the thought. Such thoughts seemed like such a foreign concept to an American of his generation, but he knew if there was a power vacuum to be filled, it certainly would be. Time and place didn’t change human nature. Even in America.
They hiked along at a good pace, the road in the valley staying relatively flat. It was sunny, but not too hot and uncomfortable. They passed several cars, all of which had been abandoned. U.S. 33 was a major highway in this part of West Virginia, but because of the lack of population density and the fact there were no major population centers for miles in any direction, the road was not heavily traveled.
